May 2024 - Well, I guess we are remixing
“Phantom Punch” by BOTD (@buyonthedip)
The Chemical Brothers - “Let Forever Be” - 1999, This collaboration between the legendary UK big beat duo and Noel Gallagher on vocals might be the closest thing to the Beatles since the Beatles. It makes me go down the thought path of, “what if the Beatles were a couple decades later.”
Tall Tall Trees - “Dust on the Windowsill” - 2023, Tall Tall Trees is the experimental banjo player and multi-instrumental soloist, Mike Savino. This particular song reminds me of Tom Petty (though maybe with a few psychedelics involved).
Jim James, Pixelated, Poolside - “Know Til Now” - 2024, This song is a remix of the Jim James song of the same name. Pixelated is the duo, Craig Pfunder and Mark Palgy (both also part of VHS or Beta). Poolside (last featured on May 2023) is a nu-disco band known for their chill version of disco.
Metronomy, Pan Amsterdam - “Nice Town” - 2024, Metronomy is an English electronic band that started in 1999, and Pan Amsterdam is jazz trumpeter turned hip hop artist, Leron Thomas (last featured Sept 2023). This is their first collab on the label Ninja Tune.
Twin Shadow - “Is There Any Love” - 2021, Twin Shadow is the stage name of George William Lewis, Jr. He is known for mixing pop, new wave, R&B, and traditional Dominican bachata.
Gibson & Toutant - “The Click” - 2024, Gibson & Toutant started as a fun side project for musicians, Josephine McRobbie and Joseph O’Connell. This song was my favorite off of their first full length LP. The simple arrangement is incredibly catchy and it reminds me of playing the violin growing up.
Wizard of Loneliness - “Sarqso for the Diamond” - 2023, Wizard of Loneliness is producer, Colin Gross, that mixes hip hop with vaporwave, jazz, soul, and in the case of this album - sound bytes from Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Pink Slip, Estef - “Best For You” - 2017, Pink Slip is American producer, Kyle Buckley. Here, he teams up with Estef, a singer from Montevideo, Uruguay, now living in Nashville. She brings an amazing vocal style to the song that is somewhere between R&B and jazz.
Marv Won, Monica Blaire - “Say My Name” - 2024, Marv Won is a Detroit rapper and producer that has been at it since 2002, either with his group, The Fat Killahz, or his duo, Twin Towers, or solo as Marv Won. He is known in Detroit as a long standing participant of the battle rap scene. Monica Blaire is also a Detroit native and chameleon of almost every genre, including classical, rock, soul, gospel, hip hop, techno, and pop.
Boosie Badazz - “Love Yo Family” - 2018, Boosie is a prolific rapper in the Southern hip hop scene. he has recorded 13 studio albums, 7 collab albums, and FOURTY FOUR mix tapes.
Angelo Outlaw - “Free My Mind” - 2024, Angelo Outlaw is one of my favorite finds of the year. He is a master of mallet percussion instruments such as the vibraphone and marimba. He brings together a unique blend of hip hop and jazz on his debut record, Axis of Time.
Pat D, Sene - “Peace” - 2009, Pat D is a beat maker and DJ that makes jazz and soul beats. Here he combines jazzy piano runs with the rapping of Sene, who I surprisingly can’t find much about.
Anderson.Paak - “The Season / Carry Me” - 2016, Anderson.Paak is a multi Grammy Award winning rapper, singer, producer, and drummer. This song is two songs in one, with two beats provided by two different producers. The Season beat is by Eighth Wonder, and the Carry Me beat is by Callum Conner.
Modest Mouse, Jeremy Sherrer - “The World At Large - Enough Love to Kill Us All Remix” - 2024, This remix was part of the 20th anniversary reissue of Modest Mouse’s hit album, Good News For People Who Love Bad News, which was a big album for me during college years. Jeremy Sherrer is a drummer, producer, and engineer from Portland, OR.
Seals and Crofts, Philip Steir, Ramin Sakurai - “Summer Breeze” - 2004, One day I was listening to this song by Seals and Crofts and I just happened to think about how it could be a cool song for a chill remix. I decided to search, and it just so happened to have a remix by Philip Steir and Ramin Sakura. Philip Steir is a drummer and producer, who has remixed songs from a ton of major artists.
Julia Jacklin - “Someday” - 2019, Julia Jacklin is an Australian singer-songwriter. This song, however, was originally by the ‘00’s indie rock band, the Strokes. She brings her signature indie pop/folk sound to the raucous original tune.
The Mellows - “Just Like Yesterday” - 2024, The Mellows are a group of brothers and best friends that cut their teeth listening to bands like The Everly Brothers and The Beatles. Their sound would fit right in with the country rock acts of the 70s.
Grayson Hamm - “Just the Two of Us” - 2021, Grayson currently only has singles out that I can find. I really latched on to this dreamy indie pop single from a few years ago.
Mr. Sam & The People People - “People People People People” - 2022, Sam Gelband sings an indie folk that is rooted deeply in his native New Orleans. His sound is incredibly optimistic in a time where I feel like it’s “cool” to be miserable, which is what drew me to this album.
Nick Shoulders - “Heart of Glass” - 2022, Nick Shoulders is one of the most talented and possibly most interesting musicians out there in the alt-country scene. He is a master yodeler, and can whistle so well that it sounds fake. Here, he covers the legendary Blondie song from from 1978.
